2nd Grade Back to School Morning Bins

Getting into a good routine can be a challenge at the beginning of the school year, but I’ve got something for you to help make your morning transitions into school easy and fun: the 2nd Grade Back to School Morning Bins. These morning bins offer the perfect warm-up for the day, because they engage students and get them happy to learn.

Is your morning routine a bit chaotic? Do you feel like you are wasting the first 10 minutes or so of the day? Do you panic when you realize that you forgot to print out some type of morning work for your students? You are not alone and we all hate it! Many teachers struggle with implementing productive morning routines, but I have a solution for you!

Simply put, our students come into the classroom with a lot of different needs. Some are not quite awake and need a little time to settle in before they start their day. Some students are super social and want to interact with their friends. Teachers need to take lunch count and attendance. There is a LOT to do in the morning? How do we make morning successful and exciting for kids? I have the answer….2nd Grade Morning Bins!

NOTE: Many teachers are choosing to use these as early finisher tubs or during a different part of the day. Generic labels have been included for this purpose.

Let’s take a look at each of the 2nd Grade Back to School Morning Bins in action! There is no right or wrong way to use these morning bins! For example, you can place all 21 bins out each month and have students work on an individual bin, or you can bring one bin out each day. However, I like the idea of allowing a table group of 4-6 students to work on one bin at a time. This allows them to socialize, work as partners, and learn from one another. I chose larger bins so that I could place all of my manipulatives, baskets and materials in the bins. See bottom of the post for more storage ideas.

2nd Grade Back to School Morning Bins:

Morning Bin #1: Vocabulary

Each month, students will have the opportunity to practice vocabulary skills by reading the vocabulary words and sorting the words in different groups. Then students will explain why they sorted them the way that they did.

Morning Bin #2: Word Use

Students will read the words in a set and place them in order according to the degree of their meaning.

Morning Bin #3: Phonemic Awareness & Phonics

Students will read the words and find a picture to match to complete the puzzle.

Morning Bin #4: Writing Conventions

Students will read a word and decide if it needs a capital letter or not.

Morning Bin #5: Spelling Conventions

Students will read the word and decide if the underlined letters form a blend or a digraph.

Morning Bin #6: Text

Students will decide if the text is fiction or non-fiction and sort to the correct mat.

Morning Bin #7: Sentences & Paragraphs

Students will unscramble the sentence, write it and find the picture that matches.

Morning Bin #8: Parts of Speech

Students will read a word and decide if the word is a noun, verb or adjective. Then they will sort to the correct mat.

Morning Bin #9: Writing

Students will read the topic and write a fact and an opinion about the topic.

Morning Bin #10: Logic & Critical Thinking

Students will turn, read and find the matching words to complete the puzzle.

Morning Bin #11: Add & Subtract

Students will read the word problem, draw a picture and write an equation to match.

Morning Bin #12: Fluency

Students will sort the math problems to the correct sum or difference.

Morning Bin #13: Multiplication Foundations

Students will divide the counters into equal groups and write how many are in each group.

Morning Bin #14: Place Value

Students will read the number and write one less, one more, ten less and ten more.

Morning Bin #15: Counting & Skip Counting within 1,000

Students will read the number and fill in the blank boxes to match the section on the 120 chart.

Morning Bin #16: Measurement & Estimation

Students will number the items from 1 to 5 to show the order of length from longest to shortest.

Morning Bin #17: Time & Money

Students will add up the coins to find the value. Then they will find the card that has the matching value.

Morning Bin #18: Data & Graphing

Students will read the list of items, tally them and graph them on the chart.

Morning Bin #19: Shapes & Fractions

Students will find the name and matching attributes for each 2D shape.

Morning Bin #20: Critical Thinking

Students will observe the patterns of the lines and draw the lines on the next shape to continue the pattern.

Morning Bin #21: Social & Emotional

With a partner, students take turns spinning an emotion. Then they tell about a time when they felt the emotion.
