Getting Ready

Prep for this class birthday book is simple!

First, I printed a front cover. Each option comes in color and black & white. Then, I printed one copy of the writing paper for me and every student in class.

I like to introduce the activity to the class with a short mini lesson…

Class Birthday Book Lesson

To begin the lesson, we sang Happy Birthday to the child, of course! Then, I spelled the students’ name in a prominent spot on the white board so that the other classmates will be able to easily refer to it later. You can even hand them out on sentence strips!

Then, I explained that every student is going to think of a birthday gift they would give their friend if money was no object. And, since we all want the birthday child to love the gifts, the class asked the student a few questions so we could learn about his favorite things.

The students had some great questions like, “What’s your favorite color?” and “What’s your favorite food?” and “If you could go anywhere on vacation, where would you go?” I was super impressed with their ideas!

After asking a few questions and brainstorming about the birthday boy, we brainstormed a list based upon their answers to the questions. For example, our birthday boy said he’d love to go to Florida someday, so we thought a plane ticket to The Sunshine State was a great gift idea!

Then, it was time to start the birthday book. We completed one of the writing papers together as a class so that I could model how they should take time with the drawing, spelling the name, writing out the gift description and an explain why that gift was chosen.

I had each child sign their name at the bottom, place the cover on top, and staple it along the left-hand side to make a book. After they wrote the birthday child’s name on top – voila! – the class’s birthday book was done!

The birthday boy was so excited about his class birthday book that he read it the rest of the day!
