Silly Board Books for Toddlers
When my kids were toddlers, Blue Hat, Green Hat by Sandra Boynton was a favorite book to spark giggles. The silly turkey can’t seem to put his clothes on correctly. Oops!
Funny Books for Preschoolers and Up
Almost anything by Jan Thomas is a hit. Our all-time favorite Thomas book is Rhyming Dust Bunnies. Ned, Ted, Fred, and Bob are dust bunnies that love to rhyme. Well, Bob’s rhyming may be a bit off. But, his words are full of warnings to keep the dust bunnies from danger.
I asked my 3 year-old which books make him laugh the most and he immediately said Elephant & Piggie. And, I agree with him. They are fantastic read-aloud books and perfect books for new readers to read on their own. His favorites are: There Is A Bird On Your Head!, Let’s Go For a Drive and We Are In a Book!
Another hit is Naked by Michael Ian Black is a super funny story too. The little boy in the story loves to run around the house naked and imagines life being naked. He soon decides that the only thing better than being naked is being caped. The little superhero flies around the house until he is all tuckered out.
Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin was one of my husband’s favorite books to read-aloud. He loves the humor and so do my kids. The cows are demanding better living conditions in the barn and they take to typing notes to Farmer Brown to be heard.
Ketchup on Your Cornflakes? by Nick Sharratt is a mix-and-match book so the kids can create lots of funny combos such as, “Do you like toothpaste in your bed?”
Time for Bed’s Story is all about the bed’s perspective. That’s right! What if your bed could talk? What would it say to you? Time for Bed’s Story is by Monica Arnaldo.
Frog VS. Toad by Ben Mantle is a tale of friendship about the importance of appreciating our similarities and our differences. This mud-slinging romp provides a lot of laughs and a big dose of learning about being friends.
Imagine if your bathtub could talk. Do you think it would like bath time? Well, I’m Terrified of Bath Time by Simon Rich shows us that the bathtub is just as terrified as some children are about the wet and ruckus time each day.
Kids will love to study the antics and expressions of these two expressive dogs. Two Dogs Auggie and Perry get pretty bored at home alone all day so they make sure to find lots of outside adventure. Kids will even love creating their own Auggie and Perry adventures. Check out Two Dogs by Ian Falconer.
I present you Bathe the Cat by Alice B. McGinty. The family cat turns household chores into a mixed-up laugh-out-loud potential disaster. Can the family get the house ready before Grandma Marge arrives? And, will the cat actually get a bath?
Pull out the magnetic letters and get ready for some playful word fun.
There’s so much to love about this book. First, the text and illustrations play off each other seamlessly. Second, I love the diversity in the family structure. Third, family love exudes off the pages. Fourth, the extension activities to do with this book are endless. Finally, this is a book that begs to be read over and over again.

Growing Book by Book Reader Favorites That Will Make You Laugh
The Growing Book by Book community has also shared some of their favorite titles below.
Tracey recommends The Book With No Pictures by BJ Novak. It really is a clever book that has NO pictures. The words are meant to make the reader say the silliest things which make the listener roll with laughter.
Chris enjoys Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. The story invites you to question and debate whether the creature is a duck or a rabbit.
New Carlisle Library says we should check out What Color is Your Underwear? by Sam Lloyd. It seems like any book you read about underwear brings a round of giggles. Animals wearing underwear is a pretty funny concept. This is a fun lift-the-flap book.
Susan enjoys Bark, George by Jules Feiffer. George’s mother asks him to bark but instead, he meows, moos, and makes other animal noises. He is promptly taken to the vet who extracts various animals from George. All is well until George’s mom asks him to bark again and he says, “Hello!”
Kathleen, Sharon and Meegan also recommend Silly Sally by Audrey Wood. Join Sally and her friends as they parade around town in this rhyming tale.
My good friend, Laura, tells us to check out Are You a Horse? by Andy Rash. This silly story is about a young cowboy who receives a saddle and has to search for a horse so he can enjoy a ride. He meets various animals who try to help him out.
There were lots of Robert Munsch books mentioned too. Reader favorites include Stephanie’s Ponytail and Mortimer.
