The Queen of Kindergarten | Book Activities and Craftivity
THE QUEEN OF KINDERGARTEN
In The Queen of Kindergarten by Derrick Barnes, MJ is off to begin her first day of school! This book is much like Barnes' previous Back to School book, The King of Kindergarten.
MJ gets dressed, gets her hair done, and feels confident about beginning her first day of Kindergarten. Her mother places a tiara on MJ's head, and tells her that she is the Queen of Kindergarten.
Her mother explains that the Queen of Kindergarten brightens every room she enters, is caring and kind, and is helpful to others.
At school, MJ decorates her name card with her favorite things: dolphins, comets, skyscrapers, and her piggy bank.
MJ makes sure to do the three things that her mother told her. First, she brightens the classroom by being the Window Monitor. Her job for the week is to open the blinds and let the sunshine in.
She is caring and kind to a classmate who is sad and wants to go home.
She is helpful when she aids another classmate in putting the blocks away. She spends her day doing lots of fun Kindergarten activities. When she gets home, MJ proudly reports back to her mother that she did all of the Queenly things her mother told her to do.
This book activities unit is packed with standards-based literacy companion activities to go with The Queen of Kindergarten by Derrick Barnes. The craftivity makes a cute bulletin board display, to showcase student learning. It includes a Queen and King page topper!
