There’s an unspoken rule that an entryway should serve as a drop-off point for all sorts of gear—shoes, coats, mail, and keys are just the start.
And while some homes have a mudroom, hall closet, or garage with dedicated storage, others lack the necessary framework for concealing clutter.
With that in mind, we turned to professional organizers for their tried-and-true tips for bringing a little more method to the madness that can be a home’s entry.
In a mudroom or entryway, function should always come first, says professional organizer Lucy Milligan Wahl, founder of LMW Edits. “You can make any system look good, but you have to create it first,” she says.

Everything from a home’s layout to your lifestyle and even the climate can affect the way the area is arranged.
If you live in a region where it’s always raining, having a dedicated and easy-to-reach spot for umbrellas and rain gear is important. If your family is involved in a heavy rotation of sports and music lessons, you might want to carve out a nook for the gear they’ll be toting back and forth.
Finally, think about how often you’ll be able to organize the space—and be realistic about it.
“Are you willing to put in a few minutes every day to tidy up or does it all need to be grab-and-go?” Wahl says. Once you’ve figured that out, analyze your space and make a thoughtful plan from there.
If your home is lacking a mudroom or an entryway altogether, you may have to fashion one.
“First, find a space that is a good one-stop-spot for jackets, shoes, bags, and more—a catchall on the way in and out where your family can store things and have easy access to coming and going,” says home improvement and lifestyle expert Kathryn Emery of Be the Best Home. It doesn’t need to be a huge area; all you really need is a little bit of wall space.
Carving out a kids’ zone can be a helpful way to encourage them to stay tidy—or something close to it. Emery suggests dedicating a cubby or shelf for each child, to help them form a habit of stowing their belongings the moment they walk in.

“A bench with storage drawers is great for kids, as they are low to the ground and simple to get in and out of,” she says.
Though if you’re looking for a more simple approach, wall-mounted hooks are the way to go. Be sure to install them at a height the little ones can easily reach for convenience when hanging coats and bags.
Swivel hooks, which can often feature three to five movable hooks, are a great option for maximizing a space and keeping one person’s items confined to a dedicated spot, Emery says. And if you have enough wall space, install a few of them in a row.

Keys can go in a small dish or tray, phones can live on a charging station, and mail can be stacked in trays, Wahl says.
Take things a step further and give each member of the family their own tray to make the process a bit more streamlined. The entry is an area that’s already filled with lots of stuff, so avoid adding anything extraneous because it will instantly become clutter.
“The area should be for the things your family uses on a daily or near-daily basis,” the organization expert says.
Shop mail and key organizers: Amazon, Target, Walmart, Wayfair
If you have more belongings than storage space in your entryway or mudroom, a freestanding cabinet can be a good solution. One that incorporates an array of useful features—think a coat rack, shoe holder, and bench—can be a great way to consolidate the basics into one neat zone.

The sort of cabinetry you choose to bring in can include features like a clothing rod, drawers, hooks, or shoe shelves, says certified professional organizer Schae Lewis of Mission 2 Organize. It all depends on your needs.
Play to the weaknesses of the area. If you’re lacking a designated zone for a specific category, be it shoes, coats, or bags, find a storage unit that can cater to that.
“If you are creating the space from scratch without any cabinetry, plenty of hooks and a shoe solution are crucial for this space,” Lewis says.

]]>We had to swap out some of our outdoor gear to make room for our stroller and other baby items, but thanks to these camper van organization ideas that I’ve developed over the years (and a bit of Tetris), everything fit in the van perfectly.
I consider an organized van to be essential to my sanity on the road. With two adults, two dogs, and now a baby, everything HAS to have a place….otherwise it quickly becomes chaos.
Here are some tips to help you take your van organization to the next level and make life on the road easier.
Before you start packing your van, measure the inside of every cabinet, drawer, and floor area where you plan to store your stuff. Start to visualize what needs to go where.
Then purchase bins that perfectly fit in these spaces in order to compartmentalize your stuff and prevent it from sliding around while you drive. Bins also make it easy to pull things in and out of the van when you are loading and unloading.
For smaller items that need to go in your overhead cabinets and drawers, like toiletries, food, and kitchen utensils, The Container Store has just about every shape and size of bin you can imagine.
For larger items, get some stackable plastic bins with lids that are the right size for your van garage. I like to lump items of the same category in my van’s gear garage bins. For instance, backpacks and hiking gear are all in one bin. Shoes are in another. Dog food in a third. This camper van organization idea will help you keep track of what goes where so you never have to search for things again!

Seems simple, but I bet 90% of us do it anyways. I know I’m still guilty of this even after all these years. Although I have my clothes pared down to what will fit in five packing cubes, once we are on the road, I realize that I still have too much.
For example, we left Salt Lake City 10 days ago, and I’m only on my second shirt. If you choose quick dry, athletic-type fabrics and solid colors that are easily matched, you can get away with a minimal number of outfits. Having fewer clothes that you can wear many times before needing to wash them makes it easier to keep your van clothes folded and tidy. Plus, it’s nice to not have an overwhelming amount of clothes in the van to have to keep organized.

The same goes for the rest of your belongings. You don’t need to bring every toiletry you might use over the next six months. Unless you’re driving to Alaska, you should have no problem getting what you need on the road. You can even get Amazon packages in most places as you travel if you really need to restock something.
Pare down your outdoor gear so you’re packing stuff for your favorite activities that you know with confidence you will use. That paddleboard that’s been collecting dust for 2 years in your garage? That can probably stay home.

Packing cubes are a genius way to store your clothes in your van. You just need one for shirts, one for pants/shorts, one for socks, one for underwear, and one for miscellaneous items like a beanie, gloves, and a swimsuit. This helps keep your clothing organized so you aren’t searching through a duffel bag or a cabinet for a pair of socks.
This is a fairly new hack for me. I recently realized that utilizing the back of your seats is a great camper van organization idea, as it provides a place to store small things that would otherwise get easily lost in the van.
On the back of my driver’s seat, I have the Overland Gear Guy Sprinter III Seat Organizer. It’s a great place to store charging cords, dog poop bags, business cards, our baby monitor, and other things that we use regularly. It also has a secret laptop compartment which is not only good for security, but also makes it easy for me to reach my computer if I want to get a little work done while Ryan’s driving.
On my passenger seat, I have the Radius Outfitters Small Trash Tube. I’m not using it for trash though. Instead, I’m using this for my dog gear (leashes, harness, chuck it, frisbee, etc) – which we use every single day. It’s so handy having everything all in one place right by the door.
Where to store your trash is an afterthought for many people when they are building out their vans. In my first Sprinter Van, I had nowhere to store my trash because I didn’t think to plan for it. I ended up hanging my trash bag on a hook on my back door. I hated that it was always visible, and when I got a dog, it became a big no-go.
In my newest Sprinter Van, I hide away my trash cans in a cabinet so my dogs can’t get to them. However with a new baby, I didn’t want to be putting dirty diapers in my kitchen trash, so I picked up the Overland Gear Guy Spare Tire Trash Bag.

It’s nice to have some extra pantry goods on hand for easy meal planning, but food can quickly eat up space in your living area. Instead of trying to cram canned goods, pasta, bread, cereal, chips, and other food into your cabinets, consider having a designated food bin.
We have a big bin in our van garage that has all of our food. It’s easily reachable from our van’s living area so whenever we need a snack or are prepping dinner, I just reach under there, open the lid and grab what I need.
For your food bin, I’d suggest something clear so you can see what’s in there and something that latches closed. This way if your dog gets sneaky OR a mouse ever makes its way into your van (it happens!), your food will be protected.
No matter how organized you are, you really have to stay on top of the clutter when living and traveling out of a small space. When you’re in a hurry (ie running out the door to hit the trail), it’s so easy to not put something back “where it goes.”
If you get lazy, before you know it, the van is a mess.
In order to prevent our whole organizational system from getting out of whack, we try to tidy up regularly. Then every couple of days we make a bigger effort to put things back where they belong and do some cleanup.

Luckily, we are always up to the challenge of finding the best way to store and keep our winter clothing, lest we get overrun! Here are some great ideas I’ve found. I hope they inspire you to tackle your winter storage dilemma.
There’s always another way to maximize your mudroom! You can fit your winter shoes into the space beneath the built-in bench. It’s a no-brainer and a breeze to make.
Yet another reason why you need to stock up on a clear plastic shoe organizer. These little pockets are everything! Hung up inside a cabinet door or in your mudroom, you and your family can easily stash away scarves, hats, and gloves while still keeping them visible.
How cute is this? But it’s also pretty useful—clip up your mittens and scarves and hang the whole rack near the door, so everything you need is a grab away as you head out the door on cold mornings.
Try mounting old drawers on casters to store all your sweaters and winter coats. This way, they’re rolled away and out of sight beneath your bed, but ready to be thrown on once the air starts getting crisp and chilly.

The promise is that buying shelves, hooks, bins, and baskets is a foolproof way to organize your home — and, therefore, that organizing your home is a foolproof way to live a stress-free life. That’s an overstatement, but it is true that living in an organized house is better than the alternative.
If you’re eager to enjoy the benefits of organization, there’s no better place to start than the kitchen — a highly functional room that’s also a gathering place for the entire household — and no better project to tackle than the pantry. The best pantry organization tools can bring order to chaos in what’s probably one of the most highly trafficked rooms in any house.
The right tools can save time and frustration hunting for that crucial ingredient that’s in there somewhere. For both ambitious home cooks and those who rely heavily on prepackaged and ready-made food, an organized pantry will make trips to the kitchen that much more serene.
Mindy Godding, founder of Abundance Organizing and incoming president of the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals, says that there are four factors to consider when organizing a pantry: accessibility, visibility, adjacency, and aesthetics. Any organization tool that doesn’t increase one or more of these is a waste of money.
“We have a lot of people in a shared space coming and going with different priorities, bringing in different stuff,” she says. “It’s an area where we’re coming together and communing as a family or as partners, but then also preparing food and nourishing ourselves. It’s a really important space to make sure that it’s functioning for you.”
Christina Hidek, a professional organizer at Streamlined Living, adds that it’s worth it to spend a bit more for durable containers made out of easy-to-clean materials like plastic and wood. They’ll cost less in the long run, and if the goal is a long-term solution, it’s worth investing in tools that will last a while. She also says that it’s crucial to ensure that the tools are right for the space.
“Measure the space, as well as what you intend to put in the organizer, to ensure it’s making good use of the horizontal and vertical space,” she says. “Too often I see the wrong storage bin or organizing solution being employed for the specific space.”
BEST OVERALL
This rack from The Container Store can double the amount of stuff that can fit on any given pantry shelf. It also works as a way to reduce the number of items stored behind other items, which increases visibility and accessibility.
This shelf expands from approximately 16 to 32 inches when the pieces are arranged in parallel, but if they’re arranged perpendicular to one another, it can also fit in a corner. This flexibility means it will probably have a home in any pantry, no matter the size and shape. Godding often recommends turntables to her clients: “They’re an easy way to bring whatever’s in the back to the front without having to move items aside,” she says. This tiered shelf is another tool that increases visibility and accessibility in any pantry. Instead of having to pick up items in the back to see what they are, it allows for a complete view of everything on the riser with just a glance. While these kinds of shelves are commonly used for spices, they’re also useful for cans, jars, and any other small items.
BEST CANNISTER
Storing dry goods in clear canisters reduces the visual clutter that comes with lots of different packaging sitting together on the same shelf. Godding adds that any clear canisters should have a silicon gasket in the lid to keep things sealed tightly. These shatter-resistant plastic Rubbermaid Brilliance containers check that box — plus, they come with scoops that make measuring extra-convenient. Lastly, by using these kinds of containers, it’s easy to shop in bulk, which is a more environmentally friendly (and less expensive) way to buy dry goods.
BEST OVER-THE-DOOR STORAGE
If there’s room between the door to the pantry and the shelves inside, an over-the-door storage rack is a no-brainer. They’re particularly great for storing kids’ snacks, keeping them both separate from the rest of the pantry and down low for smaller people to access. But, kids or no kids, this sturdy rack adds a ton of flexible storage space that would otherwise go to waste.

Bins are another key organizational tool for pantries. Godding likes that they group similar items together (adjacency!) and have right angles that don’t waste space the way curved baskets do. BEST LABEL MAKER
Even with as many clear storage items as possible, a label maker can come in handy. From flour and cornstarch to salt and sugar, there’s no shortage of lookalike ingredients, so it’s vital to label them to alleviate any confusion when cooking or baking. This label maker from Dymo is a solid option, featuring a rechargeable battery, QWERTY keyboard, wi-fi connectivity, and a wide array of font options.
BEST CAN STORAGE
Cans are an item that pretty much everyone keeps in their pantry, so a rack made especially for cans makes sense for most people. This metal rack displays cans openly for the utmost visibility. It’s also slightly tilted, so the cans roll into place neatly, and stackable, for those doomsday preppers who want to keep a ton of cans ready in case global catastrophe hits.

This handy little tool is meant to help keep carbonated drinks fizzy for longer, and it gets rave reviews! We don’t drink a ton of sodas in our house, so when we end up with a 2-liter it always goes flat. ]]>There are so many things I want to focus on long-term. Of course, I’m trying to weave in healthy food and make more effort to better my overall health. A healthy diet is the start of a functioning body! However, these monthly lists are more about treats – the good things I’ve wanted to do for a long time and never got around to getting done.
Different people will create their own form of self-care. Here are some examples you might be thinking of when trying to come up with positive things to do for yourself:
No matter how you decide to work on your mental well-being, one thing is sure – you need to start today! Take a deep breath, grab a piece of paper, and start figuring out what to do this month to boost your spirits.
My journey is a little different. I turned 45 in November, and I’m not saying that number scared me… but we all know I’m at the mid-point of my life. I thought of that the other day.
WOW – I’ve lived at least half my life already. So crazy!
And I still don’t have a set of matching cups? Even though I want them? WHAT AM I WAITING FOR?
It was an epiphany. I have a great life. I’m not saying I’m trying to get out of the trenches. I have already done that a few dozen times. Today, I am stable, mostly content, but refusing to live a life where I settle. I don’t have time to settle. I want to enjoy my spin around the sun, and I think everyone should feel this way, too.
I can’t say I always had this attitude. For the last 15 years, I was so hyper-focused on MAKING MONEY OMG! ON GETTING ANOTHER GIG! ON BEING SEEN! How ridiculous. What a waste of a decade. I feel bad for my kids. But there is nothing I can do about that. Covid taught me what life is actually about, and I am NEVER GOING BACK.
I wish I had this perspective during my 30s, but I guess that’s the beauty of aging. You learn the REAL LESSONS. I get it. I freaking get it.
Anyway, here is a list of my own self-care moves – the things I’ve done over the last two weeks that brought me joy. I spent a lot of personal time thinking about what I wanted and how I wanted to feel. Bad days still come – make no mistake. But I control my energy and my destiny, and the world wants nothing but good things to come my way.
The good news? My energy levels have never been higher. Once I realized that everything was going to be ok, it was ok. What a new way of thinking. Such a simple way to live.
As a content creator, I take a lot of pictures and videos. Two years ago, I sort of niched down to food. Luckily, I don’t need to be in as many photos as I used to. HOWEVER, my teeth still bother me when I look back at what I post online. So, I finally did something about it. I wear these retainers every night and in 8 months, my smile will be fixed. Boom.
I finally decided to get filler in my face. This is something I’ve always wanted to do. No matter how much weight I gain, three areas do not fill up.
So, as I aged, my face started to droop, and my smile lines got really DEEP. No matter how much weight I gained, it would never fill my face.
I would ALWAYS use a soft filter on IG to try to blend my lines out. They annoyed me to NO END. Thankfully, I found AIREM and will never go back. You need to get filler twice a year. I will absolutely book those appointments until the day I die.
I really kept up with my skincare routine. Obsessively. I never really cared much before, but now I am a PSYCHO. I don’t go to bed without doing my nighttime routine. And my skin is pretty clear for someone who has suffered from acne her whole life.

This is an easy one. My middle son and I whipped this room around in 5 minutes. And guess what? It feels entirely new. I used to do this as a child, too. This is definitely a personality trait. My bedroom looked 100 different ways as a teen.
What I have planned that my husband doesn’t know – redoing our master bathroom (fully) and buying a new couch. But we will cross that road when we get there.

I am a creature of habit and usually use the same spices every night when I cook. I would have a nightly meltdown whenever I went into my cabinet and watched everything fall out because it’s packed to the rim. Then I would have to clean all the excess spices that fell on the floor. UGH! Every single time I cooked.

I think any woman who reads this will understand what I am saying when I say that I made a promise to fight for myself, and I tend to keep it. As a mom, it’s so easy to become a shadow. I am a chef, a cleaner, a cab driver, a (list can go on forever).
Sometimes, I just want to be seen. I want to fight for me. I want to experience what I want. Is it selfish? Yes. But why do the women have to be the ones to sacrifice? How did that happen?
If I’m tired, I’m tired. If I want more affection, I’m going to ask for it. If I realize I haven’t gone out on a proper date in a very long time, we are going to fight until it is understood that dating is important to me.
I’m a very passionate person. But that’s a good thing and a bad thing. I love HARD, and I also hate HARD. Either I want to give my entire being over to you or you are literally dead to me. There is no in-between. I don’t know if it’s because I am a Scorpio or what? But that energy needs to be matched. Either obsess over me or forget it.
And if I have to keep reminding my husband that until I am SEEN and UNDERSTOOD, then I will. I will not live an invisible life. I will live a full life. One filled with high energy and moments that make me dizzy. Anything less isn’t for me.

Since a very young age, I have been curious about how things work. Thanks to my dad, my curiosity was satiated with an ample supply of tools and knowledge. In 6th grade, I got my first experience with a soldering iron and it all took off from there. Very quickly, I set up a work bench to do my projects on. Over the years, the working setup improved, moved and evolved.
The electronics lab bench has been optimized over the years and redesigned to fit in a smaller space. Its very functional, customized and economical. I use high quality tools but only where it makes sense. Most of the products I use, I have used for a while and have tested other cheaper alternatives, only to land on the current one. Some, I am still figuring out the best version of.
In this article, I will dive deep into every part of my workbench and show you the structure, organization, tools and parts I have collected over the years. The idea is that with this guide, my bench can be replicated with the same functionality in minimal time. Lets get into it. Feel free to navigate to parts you are interested in.
The bench is built using a 78″x24″ table top from Ikea and two Alex drawers to support it. The grey matt on the bench is a Weller ESD mat with high temperature resistance. I also have a cutting mat stowed underneath the bench for any cutting needs I may have.
Above the bench are 10″ deep wall mounted shelving. I opted for wall mounted since it is the most compact solution. The shelves are from home depot and I am using the Rubbermaid rail mounting system.
The lighting is done using two 90+ CRI LED strips mounted underneath the lowest shelf, each with a different color temperature. They are controlled using a touch switch and powered from a 24V PSU. The light can be too bright at times so I am planning to add PWM control in the future to modify brightness and net color temperature as well. It also doesn’t spread too evenly so I am looking into a diffuser as well.
All the power distribution is done using a long 12 port power strip that is mounted on a wire management tray. All the PSU’s and power wiring is managed on the tray to avoid a dangly mess underneath the desk.
I also have a bench PC that is extremely useful to collect data, interact with the oscilloscope and view schematics, datasheets etc. The display for the bench is mounted on the wall with a swivel arm.

The main appeal of my bench is the organization. I obsess over the little details and have spent a lot of time to organize every part of the bench. Organization is an ever going process though so it will never be done, it will just keep getting better.
Lets look at the organizational structure I have implemented. Everything is placed in a way that the most used things are the easiest to get to. Most frequent tools, instruments and components are out in the open. Less frequently used stuff is stored in drawers, bins and compartment boxes. I like to keep things consistent as much as possible since it makes storing them easier.
At this point, I would like to point out that you need a way to label things. Masking tape and a sharpie work great but you can get fancy with a label maker or label printer. I use them all based on what I am labelling and how permanent/important I expect it to be.
Lets start with the bench top. I have a main bin of tools that always holds a certain set of tools and based on what I am working on, will store additional tools as well. It serves as a quick way to stow away tools when not needed and easily retrieve them when needed.
The soldering iron and hot air rework station are to the right since I am right handed. They are quick to reach but also not in the way. Other things are lined up where they fit like the power supply, solder wire, USB charging station etc. I keep the left area clear so I can spread out my project further. I also usually keep a smaller bin to hold components I am actively using on the left.
There are 3 primary types of containers I use to store all my stuff:
For the drawers, I use Akro-Mills drawers as they are decent quality and come in a variety of configurations. I use these to store electronic components. Most of the drawer space is taken by my tracked inventory of components for PCB designs. I also have other electronic components like relays, panel mount switches, magnets etc. in the drawers. They are all labelled and organized in a logical way so that similar stuff is together. For example all SMD components are grouped together.
I mainly use 2 types of compartment boxes. One is the clear 10.8x7x1.8″ box that is cheap and good for a variety of parts due to its modular compartments. I store connectors, hardware, modules and dev boards in these boxes. I usually buy kits of thing from Amazon and each comes in its own unique box so I have found it better to shift the parts to these standard boxes. They are much easier to store and navigate when you are looking for something. These are stacked on the second shelf. I also do have smaller compartment boxes for some of the smaller connectors. For example all JST SH connectors go in a small box. But I have tried to have a few different sizes and stick to those instead of having each connector be its own type of box. Initially, that can work but as you add more types of parts, it gets annoying. The smaller boxes are stored in the main drawers. There are some things like connectors which come in so many shapes, sizes and use cases that I find it best to store them appropriately in different containers and different locations. My more frequently used connectors are in the drawer next to me but the less frequent ones are in the larger compartment boxes.
The other type of box I use is the Aidetek SMD component storage box. I absolutely love these things and they amazing to store a large number of components in a small volume. I have all my frequently used components in these boxes and I keep them on the first shelf for quick access.
There is a lot of things that cant fit in either of the above two options so I use bins for those. Again, I have tried to use only two sizes so that its easy to store them and they look visually more aesthetic. The top shelf is taken by bins for larger things like tapes, adhesives etc. I have larger bins with parts in the closet that hold things I very rarely need to access.
The drawers on both ends of my desk are used to store a variety of tools, parts and consumable supplies. But more importantly, I use small organizing containers to keep things inside the drawers fairly well organized. I use these ones for the shallow drawers and these for the deep ones.
The drawers I can access most easily are the top left two drawers and they hold more tools and soldering supplies. The top drawers on the right are unfortunately blocked by the soldering station wires so I keep things I use less frequently in those.
In the lower drawers, I keep more supplies and parts like wires, heat shrink, connectors etc.
On the left edge of the shelves, I have a test lead holder that I use to hang all my test leads including oscilloscope leads, Minigrabber leads, alligator jumper cables etc. Not only does this keep them straight, it also keeps them untangled and ready to use.
I have more than a thousand different electric components for PCBs and trying to find which one I have became very time consuming. So I spent even more time coming up with an inventory system for the components. The system is based on Airtable and it stores entries for each component. It automatically generates a nice label that I can use to re-bag the components since they consume so much less space in my bags compared to what LCSC, Digikey etc. send them in. I also have automation scripts to add components into the database from CSV files.
I will go into much more depth on the inventory system in a separate post that I will link here when its up. There are a lot of details about the system I want to document and share.

These will get you through most applications but you can certainly buy them in different colors, higher quality and material based on your use case. I have accumulated a variety of tubing but use the aforementioned 99% of the time.
My experience with silicon coated wires from Amazon has be great. They are not the best quality you can get but they are good enough for most prototyping applications. You can get them in any gauge and color combo your application demands. But don’t get PVC coated wires since they generally melt very easily and are poorly made. For those, you should turn to Digikey and be ready to pay a premium.
The strongest double sided tape out there. The smaller rolls are mostly fakes and not as good.

My electronic component inventory is massive with more than 1000 unique components. This inventory has built up over the course of many projects. I will write a separate blog post in which I will cover my curated list of components to get started with.
Having a variety of fastening hardware on hand helps to quickly prototype designs. The screws I use the most are course threaded screws that can thread into 3D printed plastic. I also have used threaded inserts and fine thread screws. While you can get screw kits from Amazon, the quality wont be particularly good. Hence I recommend getting them from McMaster-Carr.

While most of the hardware work is done on the lab bench, all of my programming work is done on the computer workstation. It is the perfect complement to the lab bench and allows me all the room, screen real estate and power to test and program anything I want.
The desktop PC is a custom built unit with decent specifications. It easily handles anything I can throw at it. It has the following components.

A 3D printer is a very useful and powerful tool to have. Not only can you use it to optimize your lab but you can also prototype enclosures and mechanisms for your designs. There are too many options out there and the best option for you will be based on what is it that you are looking for. You can get cheaper units that can do basic printing well and might require a bit more attention and care. Or you could go for higher end units that just work and require minimal tinkering.
I have found the Ender 3 Pro with some basic upgrades to be a great value for money and the best place to get started with. Once you feel like you need a more capable printer because you need to print an engineering material or print larger quantity, you can invest in a higher end model.

What’s your take on tool cabinet hutches, which are enclosed space add-ons that sit on top of mobile workbenches, roller cabinets, and other such base units?
Harbor Freight launched new hutches as part of their US General Series 3 tool storage line. That, and the height of the Husky Pro Duty tool cabinet I have been reviewing has got me thinking about the pros and cons of hutches.
Hutches are generally less expensive than top tool chests, and they still provide some added tool storage, usually in the form of a back panel pegboard or similar.
They also provide an easy way to mount light strips and magnetic mounting accessories and holders.
Most hutches I have seen come with fold-down doors so that you can secure their contents.
I see hutches as a way to transform a tall mobile workbench into more of a workstation.
The worktops of taller roller cabinets, as I have been learning, cannot really be used to do work on. Instead, they’re great places to stage your tools or place parts and equipment over the course of a project or task.
In that respect, top hutches extend the capabilities of a workstation. They put more tools close at hand.
I can see how they can be beneficial.
It’s not for me, though.
I have tested a wide range of tool storage products over the years, and have found that pull-out shelves and work surfaces, enclosed or lockable laptop drawers, and other such features can be restricting.
Top hutches aren’t as restricting, and allow for some customization, but they still enclose the work surface on 3 sizes and limit the clearance on top.
The way I see it, unless I need a secure and lockable top compartment, I can achieve much of the same benefits using shelf risers, similar to those found on technician workbenches, DIY pegboard or slatwall back panels, and various tabletop tool organizers.
Lighting is all but essential when adding a hutch to a tool cabinet, because they block light from 3 directions.
I think they can be a great idea in certain environments. Hutches also help make large-footprint roller cabinets look tidier.
There’s also the question of what else might be used in lieu of a hutch. Maybe a tool chest? I have found that tool drawers can get cumbersome above a certain height. At shoulder or eye level, for example, back panel and pegboard tool holders work better than drawers.
What’s your take on tool box hutches? Are there added benefits that I seem to be missing?
I can see how they’re beneficial for specific user needs, but they seem specialized, rather than a worktop accessory anyone can use.

Your home office be a second space with a door you can close or just a spot in your home where you can sit down, answer your e-mails, take a Zoom call, and stay organized every day. There are a few must-haves when creating a home office. Here are a few essential items you’ll need to get set up.
In any home office, the desk is the best place to start. I really believe that a desk will dictate the style and flow of your home office, and there are different types of desks to suit every style. You’ll want to choose one you like the look of, but something that works in your room, too.
There are so many different desks it’s going to be hard to choose just one. There are L-shaped desks that give you more than enough workspace for your computer, printer, and paperwork and smaller desks that double as a gaming desk when you’re not working. One of the latest trends in home office desks is standing desks. They can raise if you’d like to work standing up and lower when you’d like to sit.
No matter which you choose, when you pick your desk first the rest of the room will fall together quickly.
Having a good desk chair actually increases productivity. You’ll be spending a lot of time in your office chair, so it should be one of the most comfortable chairs you own. When you work at home and you have a hard office chair, it’s all too tempting to move over to your couch. Couches lead to naps, and naps, however nice, can seriously slow you down work-wise.
There are as many different types of desk chairs as there are desks. Maybe you’ll choose an executive leather chair or a bold velvet chair. Both options are comfortable and stylish. There are also mesh office chairs that are both breathable and comfortable. Whichever you choose you’ll want to make sure it’s something you can sit in for a few hours at a time.
If you find your back or shoulders hurt after long hours in your home office, you can try an ergonomic chair. This type of chair has lumbar and neck support and can adapt to your body, movement, and posture so it keeps you comfortable and supported during the day.
Bookcases are easily one of my favourite pieces of furniture, and they are an essential piece of office equipment. They control clutter because they hold all your favourite collectibles, books, and other things you like to see during the day. They are also the perfect backdrop for Zoom calls, and they are a great place to put a lamp or two for extra ambiance.
If you have space I’d recommend adding several bookcases. You could even do an entire wall and have your bookcases styled so they look built-in. If you have a small room you may want to opt for open bookcases with no back panelling, just to create a more open look.
While the latest styles favour open-shelf bookcases, there is a lot to be said for having a few bookcases or wood cabinets with doors. You can pack up your clutter at the end of the day and hide it behind closed doors so everything is neat and tidy when you walk in the next day. Some bookcases can mount on the wall above your desk to give you easy access or you can have a few different sizes and line them neatly on one wall.
For extra storage and better organization, it’s a good idea to have a mounted hutch or workspace organizer on your desk. They provide space for everything from pens to printers to paperwork, and having a clean desk helps keep your productivity up during the day.
I can’t imagine life without a filing cabinet and I believe they are a home office essential. If you look at other people’s home offices on Zoom, you’ll probably see a filing cabinet in the corner too.
They are a vital part of any work-at-home space because they keep every piece of paperwork, every receipt, and even your kid’s artwork in a neat and tidy space. They aren’t boring to look at either – the latest filing cabinets are just as stylish as your other office furniture. Some types of filing cabinets can even match your desk or bookcases, or you could choose a filing cabinet in a bold colour so it adds a splash to your home office.
Beyond a laptop and a printer, there are a few pieces of tech that have made working at home so much easier.
Webcams are a must-have if you frequently meet with coworkers on Zoom. If your laptop doesn’t have one built-in, there are several great options you can choose from. The latest webcams are available in 1080p Full HD or 4K resolution and can stream at 30 or 60fps. They have microphones built in so you don’t need to use an additional mic, and some offer features like a privacy shutter to block viewers when you’re not on a call.

What was life like before selfie ring lights and streaming lights? Video calls were often too dark and you were stuck with a harsh glare overhead or a sidelight that didn’t quite show your best side. A selfie ring light will hold your camera or phone if you’re making a video, and you can use the light to put the focus on you instead of the shadows in the room.
Streaming lights will attach to your computer or are adjustable so you can position them anywhere you need lighting. You can switch light modes depending on what you’re capturing, and some types of streaming lights have the software you can use to adjust your lighting and make you look your best.
You aren’t going to be able to answer your coworker’s questions if you can’t hear them, so a headset is a great addition to your home office. You can plug in and listen carefully to any video calls, and in your downtime use them to stream music to boost your concentration.
The latest headsets have retractable microphones so you can mute yourself with a touch. They are either corded or wireless and give you crystal clear audio for calls or if you’re tuning into a live video feed. When you’re tired of staring at the same four walls every day, overhauling your home office feels like you threw open the windows and let the spring air in. Once you’re finished setting up the main parts of your home office, there are a few ways you can make it more inviting.
You can make your home office your own unique space by adding different types of home decor. Before you shop you’ll want to create a mood board or save some ideas for a theme or colour scheme. Once you know what you like you can shop for different items to complement your space. Some people like to add a comfortable chair in a corner with a few throw pillows. You could also liven up a home office by adding wall art, blinds or curtains to block outside light, and little touches like lamps, plants, or collectibles.
An aromatherapy device can work at different timed intervals, so you can set it to turn on before you head into your home office in the morning and you’ll be greeted by a revitalizing scent. Scents like citrus can help you wake up, while a burst of lavender can signal it’s time to close up for the day.
You can mix and match different essential oils to create new and interesting scents. You can feel your mood changing when you add new oils to your aromatherapy device. Some will help you wind down after a stressful day while others will give you a boost when you feel tired.
You don’t want your home office to be a door you dread opening every day, so it helps if you set timers and boundaries for your day. You can use a smart display and voice assistant to alert you when it’s time to take a break or use it to do a guided 5-minute deep breathing exercise.
The latest smart displays stream videos from sites like Netflix or Disney+ and some have built-in cameras you can use to video chat with friends.

]]>Outdoor living, which combines both cooking/grilling and entertaining, has become increasingly important for many people who want their exterior spaces to perform like those indoors. An outdoor space is no longer just a grill and a couple of patio chairs. These days, it’s built-in appliances – such as grills with ventilation hoods, refrigerators and ice makers – being joined by sinks, pantries and even islands. Televisions and expansive lounging areas with fireplaces encourage guests to hang out outside with the chef.
This month, KBDN asked designers to share outdoor kitchen projects that bring the inside out.
COVID-19 has certainly changed much about people’s lives, including how they feel about their interior – as well as exterior – spaces.
“It’s no secret that the pandemic inspired folks to create outdoor living spaces for their families as a way to gather safely,” says Jill Jarrett, CMKBD/CAPS/co-owner of Jarrett Design in Emmaus, PA. “Increased awareness around the health benefits of being outdoors has also spurred interest in outdoor kitchens.”
For those who are making an investment outside, Jarrett has seen basic outdoor grilling areas with metal cabinets and grills set into masonry being upstaged by large outdoor kitchens with custom cabinetry and a plethora of outdoor-rated materials, inspired in part by Instagram and other social media platforms that highlight beautiful outdoor kitchens.
Case in point is this dream space that she and Jesse Jarrett, CKBD/co-owner, designed in collaboration with Awosting Construction.
The new-construction home overlooks a lake and mountains and sits within a century-old community of summer cottages with white clapboard siding, green trim and green roofs. Her clients sought to maintain that vibe in their outdoor kitchen.
“Our clients wanted a gorgeous and functional outdoor kitchen that would serve as a place to gather and entertain,” she says. “It also had to reflect the style of their home and feel like an extension of their indoor living spaces. A hearty appliance line-up was high on their wish list, too.”
With regard to appliances, they included an Evo flattop grill, 48″ Caliber Appliances grill, Perlick refrigerator/freezer drawers and The Galley workstation and tap. A critter-proof stainless steel pantry built into the lower bar area keeps food and supplies protected. All are set within NatureKast gray teak cabinetry trimmed with stainless steel and topped with Cosentino’s Dekton sintered stone, both of which were chosen for their ability to withstand the elements. Added winter protection, given the home’s northern climate, is provided by custom boat covers.
“The cabinetry offers a great aesthetic and abundant options for interior accessories,” she explains, noting the inclusion of roll-out trays, a pull-out cooking utensil organizer, a pull-out spice cabinet, a tray/cutting board cabinet, a double trash cabinet and a special cabinet that neatly organizes The Galley sink accessories. “And the countertops were chosen for their ability to stand up to the elements. Plus, the material’s white and gray colors work well with the home’s exterior.”
Because of the extensive appliance list, Jarrett focused on creating a layout that was functional for the cook, yet allowed for adequate seating and interaction with guests. Its G-shaped configuration was inspired by the curved deck foundation, where abundant seating at a raised bar fittingly follows the arc and comfortably seats six. The round shape of the flattop grill also speaks to the curved deck, thus its inclusion on the seating side. The focal-point appliance even has its own curved-front cabinet/countertop where the homeowners can tuck away the lid when the grill is in use.
“I love including appliances like the Evo,” says Jarrett. “It’s great for a morning breakfast and it provides an easy way for making a meal while getting guests involved.”
As a complement, the traditional grill is situated on the adjacent perimeter. Its retractable top allows for an unobstructed view while cooking.
“Our clients wanted the cooking appliances to face the lake,” she indicates.
Positioning the refrigerator and freezer drawers near the entrance of the kitchen allows for easy access to beverages without getting in the way of the chef, and locating the sink against the wall of the house provides some winter protection for the plumbing.
Tall stainless steel posts that match the deck railing support a large sail that provides shade on sunny days. Custom fabricated, they also include lighting that sets the mood at night.
“They didn’t want a permanent structure, which would make it dark inside the house,” she explains.
Like Jill Jarrett, Lisa Sherry has seen more clients gravitate toward outdoor living, especially in the past several years.
“We’re definitely doing more outdoor kitchens…that are also more luxurious,” says the principal designer of Lisa Sherry Interieurs in Charlotte, NC. “That trend started before the pandemic, but it became a bigger push during the ‘stay at home era’ where everyone wanted more space to spread out. Clients felt that if they couldn’t travel to a resort, they wanted to make their homes a resort. Having more cooking and entertaining capabilities outside definitely seems to be the trend.”
Those exterior spaces are also shifting toward a luxurious contemporary and streamlined aesthetic with a more monochromatic color palette, similar to what Sherry has seen happening inside the home.
“We used to see a lot of stone and masonry with a more traditional look,” she says, noting a current preference for materials such as concrete and ‘clean’ woods. “Outdoor kitchens used to look a lot more ‘outdoor.’ But now, in terms of actual design, there are so many similarities to what we’re doing inside, where, in general, we’re seeing a more cleaned-up look that is a little more linear. And manufacturers are also providing materials with a more modern aesthetic that give us the durability needed for outdoors. I’m less traditional and more modern in my design style, so I love it.”
Those trends are evident in two recent outdoor spaces that, although visually at opposite ends of the color spectrum, both showcase contemporary design.
“Both of these clients, like most, are looking to move from entertaining inside to entertaining outside…with easy access,” she explains. “Typically, my clients who are putting in outdoor kitchens also have a pool and an expansive outside area that is perfect for entertaining, so they want to be able to do so easily.”
In one case, the outdoor living space is easily accessible via sliding doors from the open-concept floor plan interior of the new-construction home completed in collaboration with Joyce Building Co. (builder) and Cluck Design (architect). It includes a cooking/grilling area, a sofa and chair for lounging and a custom dining table with unique live-edge legs and seating for plenty of guests, all protected beneath a roof. Cypress wood on the walls and ceiling combine with a steel backsplash and concrete countertop to create an earthy and moody vibe, which juxtaposes the home’s light interior.
“The darker materials used in this kitchen really make it feel special…and a bit moodier, which is great for nighttime entertaining,” Sherry relates. “And, it’s almost all enclosed, with the exception of the two sides that are screened.”
A Hestan natural gas grill and Perlick refrigerator make entertaining easy, while a sink makes for easy cleanup.
“A great grill and refrigerator are two must-have elements,” she indicates. “I also like to include a trash pull-out and plenty of counter space. I’m also seeing people include warming drawers, pizza ovens and even dishwashers.”
Another recent outdoor kitchen project, designed in collaboration with Thompson Custom Building Group, is in an open area between the house and a covered lounging area. Light and bright were considerations for this client, who didn’t want to lose light inside the home by covering the outdoor kitchen.
“This kitchen is smaller and doesn’t necessarily have a lot of bells and whistles,” she relates, “but it’s still conducive to entertaining.”
Since it is uncovered, Sherry made sure to include materials and appliances that were intended for outdoor use, including the built-in Delta Heat 32″ grill with rotisserie, Big Green Egg kamado grill and bluestone countertop and floor.
Southern California is conducive to outdoor living, where open-air spaces are often a top priority for homeowners, including these clients who wanted to transform an unkempt and neglected backyard into a clean, contemporary oasis where they could entertain friends and hang out with family.
“Their backyard was overgrown with vines that covered everything, and the curvy barbecue area just didn’t match their style,” recalls Nicole Valentine, senior designer, JRP Design & Remodel in Westlake Village, CA. “We cleaned it up, reconfigured the layout and incorporated contemporary design elements to give them the perfect blend of beauty, form and function. Now the space is open and inviting with an amazing barbecue and lounge area to complement the pool, which is visible from anywhere in the yard.”
A focal-point media center sits at the heart of the grilling/entertaining area where a large TV is positioned above a built-in fireplace.
“Being able to watch sporting events with friends was a big concern for the husband,” the designer recalls.
To each side of the television, Valentine and the design/construction team incorporated the outdoor kitchen essentials. One side relates to cooking, such as the 42″ Lynx grill and PCM components that include a trash pullout, double doors that conceal storage and a trio of stainless steel drawers, the latter of which also features a place for paper towels as well as spatulas and other cooking utensils.
“I always encourage clients to consider a trash pullout and a paper towel holder,” she advises. “Cooking outside is messy, so it’s great to have a place to drop your trash. And, if you spill something, it’s nice to have paper towels handy for cleanup.”
A Lynx undercounter refrigerator and a PCM pantry are positioned on the opposite side of the television.
“The barbecue area is a bit of a walk from the interior kitchen, so it has to function on its own,” Valentine relates. “The pantry is great for storing glassware and plates so my clients don’t have to run back into the kitchen. We included the refrigerator close to the pool so guests can easily grab a drink without being in the way of the cook.”
Selecting materials that could withstand the elements was paramount as well, thus the inclusion of a Cosentino Dekton countertop and ipe cabinetry, which adds a richness and warmth that juxtaposes the concrete.
“We used Dekton in this project. It has been available for a while, but there are some new countertop materials becoming available that are blowing our minds,” she relates. “For example, quartz companies that make indoor countertops are now coming out with collections that can be used outdoors.”
Given its typically sunny climate, providing shade was an important consideration, too, which was accomplished via a pergola.
“The shade structure plays with the light and casts shadows, which was intentional to reinforce the linear elements in the backyard,” notes the designer, adding that it is foiled by the curvy, free-form pool.
“The curves of the pool create contrast,” she continues. “I believe that good design should also include what I call a ‘foil.’ The backyard is a grid with a lot of straight lines, so having one element that is more curvy helps to break things up.”
Valentine also appreciates the contribution made by the bright teal tile that was used to resurface the pool.
“Designing outdoor spaces requires a different way of thinking,” she explains. “When you’re outside, you don’t usually have a ceiling or walls that enclose you. There’s also direct sunlight so we have to think about lighting differently, which gave us the ability to play with the shadows from the pergola. There’s also a different ruleset for materials. For example, the pool tile…it’s an amazing 1″x1″ bright teal tile. I’d never use it inside a house, but it works perfectly for the pool!”
When this outdoor kitchen was posted to its community’s Facebook group, it went viral.
“The entire next day I sat at my desk answering calls,” says Marissa Moore, principal designer/Allied ASID, Interior Style by Marissa Moore in Aldie, VA, who designed the space in collaboration with Maruca Design Build.
Moore credits much of its popularity to its uniqueness. Outdoor living and entertaining are important to homeowners in this community, which is located in Loudoun County where large renovation/construction budgets support large homes with large yards. This client was no different in that respect, however, she did want her outdoor space to be unlike any others in the neighborhood.
“There are a lot of outdoor spaces here, but everyone tends to do the same thing,” she relates. “It’s a very cookie-cutter neighborhood. Everyone’s house is the same. But this outdoor entertaining area is completely different. There isn’t anything else like it around here.”
One distinguishing characteristic that sets it apart is its size. The entire outdoor entertaining/cooking area is substantial, encompassing two levels with the kitchen and a small seating area on the upper deck. A dining area, freestanding fire pit and large living room with a built-in fireplace, TV and sofa are on the lower level, which leads to a pool. Tall ceilings accented with beams and skylights provide protection from the elements and retractable screens and glass walls add to the outdoor ambiance and provide easy access to the yard.
While it is considered an outdoor space, Moore’s client wanted it to feel like an interior space.
“She wanted it to be as cool as any interior kitchen,” she relates, adding that this request has become popular with many of her other clients as well. “People want to spend time outside and they want a luxe entertaining space that makes them feel like they are inside. They want it to be an extension of their home. They want to bring the inside outside.”
With regard to this kitchen, that translates to the inclusion of several elements that can be found in a typical indoor counterpart. For starters, the designer included an island, complete with seating, an undercounter refrigerator and plenty of storage.
“People want seating…at an island or a bar,” she relates. “Outdoor spaces are all about entertaining, so when the chef is at the grill, guests can interact.”
For an added ‘wow’ factor, the granite countertop falls vertically with waterfall edge details on each end. Since this kitchen must perform independently from the interior kitchen, the designer also included a sink for easy cleanup.
Around the perimeter she included a second undercounter refrigerator along with a 60″ Lynx grill and Big Green Egg kamado grill, both equipped with a ventilation hood.
“Everyone, including this client, wants a bigger built-in grill, and if the space is enclosed, it needs a ventilation hood,” she relates.
Moore repeated the granite countertop around the perimeter and complemented it with a porcelain tile backsplash, giving it an interior vibe with a contemporary design style. A television is mounted on the wall within easy viewing of guests and the cook.
“Everyone wants a TV that they can see from the kitchen area!” she indicates.

]]>My dear friends, it’s high time I share my home office tour with you! This tour has been a long time coming. Mr. Tidbits and I finished this space a while ago, but it’s been going through a series of tweaks while we sorted out how to best utilize this new home office space.
You see, this office is an addition to our home. I give full details about how this small home office came to be in my YouTube video on this space, but let’s just say that once we built our home, we found that we needed more space for
A: a mudroom/drop zone and
B: a distraction free workspace for myself and Mr. Tidbits.
So, we set out to design a home office and mudroom addition off of our existing living room.
I shared our mudroom reveal with you recently. Today, the shared home office is finally getting its day in the sun. I’d love to walk you through the major design elements of this room and share some of my favorite small home office ideas.
Structure first, right? At least that’s what Mr. Tidbits says, so that’s where we started with this room. We drafted a floor plan for this office that was designed to give it plenty of natural light. We opted for large windows on two of our exterior walls.
Our window shades filter the bright sunlight behind the computer screen and I prefer them over traditional blinds. The abundant natural light is a one of my favorite elements in this room. We rarely need overhead lighting in here. When the light is low outside, we switch on our desk lamp.
We decided to install some faux beams in our new home office. The beams give this space a touch of old-world character. We stained the beams to match the beautiful walnut cabinets in this office.
The paint in this room is another one of my favorite elements. Do you remember when we painted the rest of our house? I did a review of the Pure and Original paint that we used. I adored the textured look it gave us and wanted to do something similar in this space.
Mr. Tidbits used a special technique using baking soda and water to give our wall paint a faux concrete/plaster look. Checkout our YouYube video for more details. It’s hard to photograph, but I love the warm, antique look of these walls.
Flooring was an important element in this shared office room. I’ve been dreaming of having a black and white marble floor for so long. Over the years I’ve collected quite a few checkerboard flooring ideas. We finally made my flooring dreams come true when we chose this gorgeous black and white marble set in a harlequin or diagonal checkerboard arrangement. No rugs here! I want to see this beautiful floor.

To keep this narrow home office layout from feeling closed in, we built open shelving along of one of our office walls. We utilized our vertical space by building these shelves all the way up to the ceiling.
I wanted this small space to feel airy and light and I think that the open shelving certainly helps achieve that. It gives us a place for both decor and storage.
The arches along the top row are one of my favorite parts of this room. The little alcoves they create are totally charming. We put a piece of our favorite pottery in each alcove. I love the bit of romance that they add.
Our home office cabinets were custom built for this space by Mr. Tidbits. Of course, we chose to build them out of our current favorite, walnut wood. The natural color is a soothing compliment to the marble floor and stone countertops.
There is no closet in this room, so these cabinets provide some essential storage space. We keep these cabinets stocked with things like office supplies, sewing materials, and our printer. Having some cabinets or cupboards with doors really helps cut down on clutter and keeps the rest of the room looking tidy.
Next up we have countertops. We honed these countertops out of remnants we picked up from a local supplier. You can find out how we hone and install countertops by reading our tutorial. It’s definitely worth the work to be able to have stone counters for a fraction for the price!
If you look closely, you’ll notice that we used two different types of stone in this room. The wall with the open shelving has a quartz countertop, and the wall with our desks has a marble countertop. I love how well the they play together, but I also like the subtle difference that helps set these two areas apart. I think it’s a charming touch.
The shared desk was made by placing our honed marble countertop across two wooden file folder cabinets.
You can be sure that we make good use of the file folder cabinet drawers to store our project information and important documents. Creating our own large, custom desk for this space was a huge money saver!
Now that I’ve shared the major main design elements of this room, I want to share some of my best tips for creating a small home office that you will love.
My first tip is to choose a desk chair that you will love. Office furniture can be tricky to shop for. I don’t always love the way desk chairs look, but they’re an important part of a functional workspace. Mr. Tidbits and I spend a lot of time working in this room and therefore, a lot of time sitting in these office chairs.
I tried several office chairs before settling of these beauties. I wanted chairs that could deliver both comfort and style for this room. I’ve been happy with how these chairs have performed in both areas. These linen covered chairs add softness and warmth to our desk space.
My next tip is to make the very most of your small home office space. If you, like me, want your office to be both beautiful and functional, I recommend taking advantage of any opportunity to blend storage and style. Look for decorative elements that can serve a functional purpose.
In this small office, we’ve had to get creative. We used a decorative basket for our office waste basket. We’ve also got baskets of yarn and fabric. I have some lovely linen boxes that hold paint samples and art supplies. Get creative and see how you can create storage solutions with the decorative items in your home!
We’ve also repurposed some thrift and antique store finds into organization tools for our desk area. My favorite cubby sorter holds stationary, my secret chocolate stash (don’t tell!) and other office accessories.
Mr. Tidbit’s antique table-top bookshelf holds boxes to sort his office supplies and documents. The antique letter holders above our desk are the perfect place for us to sort our important mail. I love having storage solutions that look like decor.
I believe that your home office should be a space that you truly enjoy. I wanted this shared office to reflect the personalities of both myself and my husband. To do this, I tried to add elements that represented both of us. My side of the desk holds that chippy blue antique organizer I mentioned above. I’ve also got a darling country-themed calendar that just speaks to my homestead loving soul.
My husband’s side of the desk has more dark colors and wood tones. His workstation holds his tabletop antique bookshelf. Mr. Tidbits has also displayed a few nick knacks with special significance that he’s collected over the years.
I love seeing both of us represented in this space. I also know that my work days are more enjoyable when I love my surroundings. I’d encourage you to look for ways to personalize your space to bring you joy.
Lastly, remember to bring items into your home office that inspire you. Personally, I love art. I have some framed pieces of meaningful artwork that I placed in this space to inspire me. I keep a bolt of linen fabric in here because I’m always working on new ideas for my Tidbits Linen product line. Whenever possible, I also love bringing fresh flowers into this space for a bit of inspiration.
Over on Mr. Tidbit’s side, we hung his engineering degree certificate on the wall. He loves the outdoors so we added a plant to bring a touch of nature to his space. And of course, Mr. Tidbits and I both have a Tidbits Planner on our desk. I find that putting my ideas on paper always gives me lots of inspiration.
At the end of the day, I’m really happy with this little office nook of mine. Having a home office area that is separate from our living area is a luxury I appreciate. It’s so nice to have a setup that allows us a quiet space to work and study.
